Pinterest is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing social media outlets on the web. Just this month, it became one of the top 10 most used social networking sites. In case you’re not familiar with the site, it’s a place where individuals can post a collection of images and videos on pages called “Pinboards.”

Social networking sites such as Twitter connect people through words, where as Pinterest connects users through images.

The site enables users to collect and view images displayed on the boards. Users can create their own boards and “pin” images they found online spanning a diverse range of topics. Viewers can discover and share the images easily which is the main goal of the site.

Some people enjoy using Pinterest because it’s an excellent way to share images, conveying what you’re passionate about. For example, an interior designer may create a board consisting of furniture pictures to plan a living space for his or her client.

Ben Silbermann launched Pinterest in March, 2010 and quickly amassed a large following. After reaching 11.7 million active users this month, it’s considered the fastest growing social network, according to TechCrunch.

The average user spends about 100 minutes on the website in one sitting. Sixty-eight percent of  users are females from the Midwest, according to data from TechCrunch.

There are many reasons for the rise in popularity of this social scrapbooking site, Forbes indicated. Pinterest is fun and easy for visitors to navigate. Unlike other social networking sites this one focuses on interests/hobbies, not just friends. So it brings people together based on their collective interests and hobbies.

Pinterest now generates more referral traffic than Linkedin, Youtube and  Google +, a Sharaholic study revealed. This new site offers unique opportunities to advertisers and marketers who want to promote their products and services.

Retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman and Land’s End created pinboards of various accessories. The virtual pinboard  allows users to discover new products easily.
